Unlocking Insights on Data Platform and Analytics
An interview with Victor Martinez Albarracin
At a recent internal knowledge-sharing session, HiQ-expert, Victor Martinez Albarracin, Data Analyst and Engineer, shared his expertise on data platforms, the power of business intelligence (BI), and how data can be harnessed to drive smarter decisions. His insights highlight the growing importance of BI and data analysis in shaping future strategies across industries.
Could you briefly introduce your role and how it
intersect with data-driven initiatives?
– As a Data Analyst at Volvo Group, I work closely with business intelligence tools to extract insights from data across various departments. My role involves understanding the data needs of the business, running queries, and presenting information in ways that make sense to different teams—whether that’s sales, marketing, or finance. I’m particularly focused on creating dashboards that help track KPIs and guide strategic decisions.
Business intelligence seems to be central to your work.
What are some of the key challenges you face when
working with BI systems?
– One major challenge is the diversity of data sources. We often deal with data coming from multiple platforms, which means it’s critical to ensure that everything is consistent and reliable. For instance, one of our projects involves integrating data from finance, HR, and sales to get a holistic view of the company’s performance. But with so many moving parts, ensuring that the data is clean and actionable can be complex.
At Volvo Cars, we rely on advanced integration and transformation layers to bring everything together. Still, the process of making sense of raw data—especially across different regions and systems—can be daunting. It’s not just about collecting data but ensuring that it’s usable and meaningful.
Data platforms and analytics are rapidly evolving.
What do you think are the most important trends
in this area?
– One of the most exciting trends is the shift toward cloud-native platforms like Snowflake and Databricks, which allow us to handle data at scale. These platforms are essential for managing both structured and unstructured data, enabling more efficient data processing and analysis. Another key trend is the increasing focus on real-time analytics, where decisions can be made based on live data streams, rather than static, historical data.
I would also add that the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning is becoming more prominent. We’re already seeing how AI can help us predict trends and automate some of the more labor-intensive data analysis processes. For example, we’re starting to use AI models to forecast sales patterns based on customer behavior, which can help improve everything from inventory management to marketing strategies.

Can you share a specific example where your
BI efforts had a tangible impact?
– We recently implemented a BI solution that helps track consumer behavior across various markets. By visualizing this data through dashboards, we were able to identify trends that directly impacted our sales strategy. For instance, we noticed a sharp increase in demand in a particular region and adjusted our marketing and sales efforts accordingly. The result was a significant boost in revenue.
Finally, what advice would you give to companies
looking to improve their use of data?
– Invest in a robust data infrastructure. It’s important to have a scalable and flexible platform that can handle growing data needs. Also, ensure that your data is consistent across all systems—this will save you a lot of headaches down the road.
Another thing is to focus on the end-user experience. Data is only useful if people know how to interpret and use it. Dashboards, reports, and insights should be tailored to the specific needs of different teams, whether that’s sales, finance, or operations. It’s also essential to have ongoing training and support to make sure everyone is comfortable with the tools and platforms they’re using.
