Confident in Swedish – A Language Initiative that Builds Courage and Connection

Since January this year, a group of HiQ-colleagues with Swedish as a second language has been gathering twice a month – not to work, but to talk. The initiative, led by Udari Pathirannehe, aims to help participants feel more confident speaking Swedish in everyday situations.  The group meets after working hours and includes team members from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India, Bosnia, Serbia, Vietnam and Cambodia. At every session, a native Swedish-speaking colleague is invited to join – not to correct, but to support, guide, and create a safe space for open conversation.

Real-life practice, real-life topics

Each session follows a simple yet effective structure. Two participants are given the tasks to:

  1. Prepare a word or a phrase of the day which is commonly used in the day-to-day life.
  2. Prepare a relatable everyday topic for everyone to speak about – for instance, how to call a handyman, or what their first day in Sweden was like.
  3. Prepare a few surprise topics that are drawn at random during the session for spontaneous storytelling.

– “It’s not about perfection—it’s about courage. We lift each other up with laughter, kindness, and a shared love for learning.” says Udari.

Supported by the company – with space, food and inspiration

HiQ contributes by providing a space for the group, dinner for the participants, and – when needed – guest speakers. This makes the sessions feel more like a shared experience than a language class, where culture and personal stories take center stage.

– “I’m here to boost my Swedish (the more feedback, the better!) and have a blast learning about awesome people and their cultures along the way!” shares one participant from Cambodia.

More than just language

This is not only a language group – it’s a platform for inclusion, friendship and empowerment. By encouraging people to share their voices and experiences, the initiative helps build a workplace where more people feel at home – in the language and in the community.

“The speaking club is a fun and useful way to learn, improve, and actually speak Swedish—especially when it’s hard to find chances outside the group!” – participant from Bosnia

Conclusion: When people grow, the company grows

“Confident in Swedish” shows that small initiatives can create great value. By investing in language as a key to connection and inclusion, we’re building a stronger culture—one where more people feel confident to contribute, connect, and truly belong. Because when people grow, so does HiQ.
