HiQ digitalize a collaborative game to address the sanitation crisis

HiQ is digitalizing a board game, RECLAIM, that captures the challenges in the sanitation service chain and inspires players to build more sustainable systems. A digital version of the game enables the project to reach a larger target group and the game to be played online.

“We are so proud to be working on this project with SLU and all other partners. The world is facing big challenges when it comes to sanitation and sanitation planning is something that can change the lives of a lot of people. The game we have digitized, RECLAIM, especially explores technical and societal readiness of alternative Nutrient-recovery Systems. The results will assess the potential of alternative nutritional recovery systems in Uganda municipalities, to provide benefits to public health and the environment. This knowledge will expand the arsenal of solutions to address the sanitation crisis,” says Jenny Svensson Borg, Project Manager at HiQ.

Poor sanitation has major negative impact on the lives of millions of people around the world, including disease and pollution of waterways. The SPANS project (Sanitation Planning for Alternative Nutrient-recovery Systems) focuses on alternative sanitation systems that can recycle nutrients in Uganda. In Uganda only 29% of the urban population have access to a good toilet. Together with Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet (SLU), HiQ has as mission to analyze what could be done digitally within the framework of the research project.

As part of the project HiQ digitalize the existing physical board game, RECLAIM, as a way of informing decision-makers in sanitation planning. The game captures the challenges in the sanitation service chain and inspires players to build more sustainable systems in a collaborative manner. It helps players explore new structures for managing human waste, both in physical infrastructure and in management organizations, thus improving knowledge related to adaptation and innovation in sanitation planning. The digitalized board game is developed as an online tool to bring more players together in the planning process.

The analog version was tested with decision-makers and university students in Uganda and Sweden, and participants have found the game both fun and useful for discussing challenges in sanitation planning. Using the platform Foundry, HiQ has developed a digital version of the physical board game so that the project can reach a larger target group and be played online. Since the game is incredibly complex, the initial idea was to digitize only certain parts, but thanks to HiQ’s game developers it was possible to digitize the entire game.

“I am looking forward to using the digital game within the training sessions that we will do on sanitation planning this coming year. Having the game both as a physical and digital tool opens up for more possibilities in participatory planning processes,” says Jennifer McConville, Project leader at SLU.

This project is a collaboration between researcher Jennifer McConville from SLU and Charles Niwagaba from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. The project group also consists of Visual Arena in Gothenburg, documentary filmmaker Görki Glaser-Muller, Professor Monica Biller from Chalmers University, Professor Jaan-Henrik Kain from Gothenburg University and HiQ.

Hi 👋u003cbru003eI’m Karolina and I work with PR u0026amp; Communications at HiQ. Do you want to know more about all the cool things we do at HiQ, or have any other questions? Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me!

HiQ is nominated in this year's Magnet Awards, the Nordics' largest competition for Employer Branding. With the End Bad Tech campaign, HiQ competes in the category Attraction. “With End Bad Tech, we wanted to stand out and, at the same time, focus on what HiQ is and stands for. It's fantastic that the campaign has exceeded both goals and expectations, and I'm very proud that we are nominated in this year's Magnet Awards, says Helena Herolf, Chief People Officer at HiQ,” says Helena Herolf, Chief People Officer at HiQ.

The Magnet Awards are often described as the Swedish Championships in Employer Branding. It is an industry initiative and the Nordic region’s largest competition in its segment. HiQ is nominated in the category Attraction with the company’s End Bad Tech campaign. The category involves Employer Branding to build familiarity and attractiveness and recruit future competence. Only contributions that mainly consist of external communication are allowed, and the effect figures that the jury wants to see must be able to be linked to pre-set and measurable goals.

The End Bad Tech campaign has been developed together with the creative agency Post Sthlm. The concept centers around bad technology as our worst enemy. Three situations were developed with consultants as the heroes and bad technology as the antagonist: the problem, the struggle, and the win. The idea was to build an engaging narrative that could take the recipient on a journey and, at the same time, clearly position HiQ. In addition to the visual campaign, content has been produced based on personas for the three phases: Awareness, Consideration and Decision. The content has been produced together with the digital agency Invise.

The campaign went live in August 2022 and has, since its launch, exceeded both expectations and goals.

The Magnet Awards involve employers measuring their strengths in different categories. The contributions are assessed based on each category’s specific requirements and look at how creativity drives impact. This year’s jury includes representatives from the agency world, communications, HR, and business. Nearly 100 entries were submitted, and on March 15, the winners are announced in Stockholm.

HiQ helps RCL Holding meet risks and challenges when RCL Holding acquires Sefina Pantbank AB and HPO OY. HiQ’s framework within Technical Due Diligence is easily applied to the project, which finishes in only three weeks. “I’m very proud of the team for executing and finishing this assignment so quickly. It really shows that our offering within Technical Due Diligence is well thought out and easy to adapt to many different companies and situations. We keep simplifying for our clients and, in turn, simplifying the world with tech,” says Samuel Skott, CEO of HiQ.

In today’s fast-moving world, it’s sometimes essential to execute projects at a very high speed, especially when it comes to acquiring other companies. With this comes being adaptable and open to change. By reducing the risks connected to an acquisition and preparing the way for the buyers to increase the value of the business, a particular framework can be used so that the post-acquisition life is made much easier for management teams in different organizations.

Investment company RCL Holding means to acquire Sefina Pantbank AB and HPO OY and therefore needs to understand several challenges and risks to complete the transaction. The risks and challenges include the overall status of the software used, risks connected to the acquisition from an IT perspective, the potential to use the existing software in other Holding businesses and investments required to remedy any technical debt and IT legacies. RCL Holding turns to HiQ to assist with this assignment and to help meet these risks and challenges. In only three weeks, the project is finalized.

“We are very happy to work with HiQ on this. Their help and that they were very quick on their feet enabled us to finalize the deal in due time. It was vital for our business to be able to execute this so quickly. Furthermore, HiQ compiled a report that included evaluations of all areas of interest concerning necessary improvements, giving us a direct understanding of risks and a bargaining chip in the bidding process. In addition, they highlighted concrete KPIs that can improve the value of the business over time, which is great,” says Christoffer Lundström, CEO at RCL Holding.

HiQ needed to evaluate Sefina’s and HPO’s position against the best practices in all IT-related areas, with a focus on software development and products. The team at HiQ also prepared a list of recommended actions and cost estimations connected with each such action. With HiQ’s extensive experience in Technical Due Diligence, a project was initiated using the proven and successful framework HiQ developed over the years. The framework allows for systematic, overarching analysis of the technology-related aspects of businesses. It includes analysis of documentation, interviews with key staff, know-how for structured facts collection and interpretation.
