Ziklo – Effective Brand Transformation with the Zest Design System

When Ziklo set out to launch a new brand while still managing the digital presence of Volvofinans Bank, they needed a scalable and efficient way to handle design. Together with HiQ, they developed Zest – a flexible design system that enabled rapid adaptation, reduced duplication, and delivered a consistent user experience. Thanks to smart timing and a strategic approach, Ziklo managed to both future-proof its digital identity and streamline its workflows in a way that adds long-term value.

The Challenge

Ziklo faced a dual challenge: launching its new brand while continuing to manage the digital presence of Volvofinans Bank. The task was to create a clear new digital identity for Ziklo without losing momentum or consistency in the existing services of Volvofinans. It was crucial to minimize user impact during the rebranding and at the same time enable an efficient, future-proof design process.

The Solution

“We were lucky with the timing. We decided to test it – and it turned out really well.”

Elin Davidsson, Head of Design and UX, Ziklo

To meet these demands, Ziklo’s UX team partnered with HiQ to take a strategic leap: build a design system from the ground up. At the perfect moment, Figma introduced support for variables – a feature the team quickly embraced.

“It would have been really frustrating if we’d built all this and then they launched variables now.”

Anders Andrén, Art Director, HiQ

The Result

The outcome was Zest – a scalable, component-based design system built to support multiple brands and applications. Zest enabled Ziklo to work consistently across all digital interfaces, using tokens and components that could be centrally updated and automatically rolled out.

Key results:

  • 9,600 hours saved thanks to reusable components that are updated centrally and spread automatically across systems.
  • More efficient processes with reduced redundancy and a clearer structure in the design workflow.
  • A unified experience – Zest is now used in 15 of Ziklo’s 31 digital applications, with more to come.

Zest has also become a key pillar in Ziklo’s accessibility efforts, allowing fast adaptation and quality assurance across the digital ecosystem.

The Future

“Sometimes people ask us when the design system will be finished, but we see it as a central part of our digital strategy.”

Elin Davidsson, Head of Design & UX, Ziklo

Zest isn’t a project that will ever be “done” – it’s a continuous initiative that evolves with Ziklo’s digital strategy. But with a smart, flexible, and future-ready design system, Ziklo has not only strengthened its digital identity but also created the foundation for faster deliveries and higher quality now and in the future.
